About This Release

A really unusual album from saxophonist Byard Lancaster - completely different than any of his older records from the 60s and 70s, and a set that features a fair bit of vocals mixed with African musical currents! Lancaster still plays flute and alto sax on the record, and about half the tunes are instrumental - but he also sings as well, working alongside vocalist Annie Wirz in a lineup that also includes Fender Rhodes and a lot of percussion. There's a beautifully soulful quality to the record that we don't remember from most of Lancaster's other work, and the mixture of Fender Rhodes and percussion makes for a totally hip vibe, and a sound that's way more than straight jazz.
