From Shakespeare to Mozart to classical opera, Car Seat Headrest's Will Toledo pulled from the classics when devising the lyrics and story arc of 'The Scholars,' while the music draws, carefully, from classic rock story song cycles such as The Who's 'Tommy' and David Bowie's 'Ziggy Stardust.' "One thing that can be a struggle with rock operas is that the individual songs kind of get sacrificed for the flow of the plot," Toledo notes. "I didn't want to sacrifice that to make a very fluid narrative. And so this is sort of a middle ground where each song can be a character and it's like each one is coming out on center stage and they have their song and dance." While Car Seat Headrest started as Toledo's solo project, the four-piece is now fully a band. "What we've been doing more of in recent years is just taking the pulses of each other." says Toledo. "It didn't really feel to me like things got in sync in an inner feeling way until this record, with that internal communal energy. And it's become that band feeling for me in a much more realized way. That's been a big journey." Pink Floyd at Pompeii - MCMLXXII, the groundbreaking 1972 film directed by Adrian Maben, has been digitally remastered and remixed by Steven Wilson. Set in the hauntingly beautiful ruins of the ancient Roman Amphitheatre in Pompeii, Italy, this unique film captures Pink Floyd performing an intimate concert. This audio companion contains the live performances from the film as well as two additional tracks, including a previously unreleased extended version of "A Saucerful Of Secrets".

Esther Rose was on a long solo drive when she started writing the opening title track of Want, her stunning fifth album. At first, the words seemed almost like a joke, something to keep herself amused as the miles passed. “I want a puppy, but I don't want a mess. I want to know where I’m going without GPS,” she sang from behind the wheel. Soon, the idea snowballed into a list of desires that spanned existential, spiritual, and mundane; romantic to platonic to familial; at once wildly ambitious yet piercingly relatable; all set to a catchy melody that blends her pop instincts with country storytelling and the raw immediacy of a basement punk show. In other words, she was on her way to another classic Esther Rose song. This precise blend has made the Santa Fe-based artist one of her generation’s most beloved songwriters: someone whose live shows are known to conclude in mass tears and group hugs. Still, something was different this time. “For me, these songs felt like revelations,” she explains, comparing the 11-song record to a memoir, alive with kinetic storytelling and personal insight. In its newly direct and stirringly nuanced writing, you’ll hear about rock bottom encounters, shifting relationships with substances, evolving perspectives on adult partnership, and, as evidenced by those early lines in “Want,” a few jokes along the way. With his latest record, Crisis Kid, Corbin dials back the angst in favor of an intimate vocal style that sounds like he's reading his diary from a candlelit cabin. A more polished and refined version of Corbin resurfaces as he contemplates collective suffering, generational trauma, and the quest to find hope during the bleakest timeline, offering a voice for the voiceless.

Hate, who formed in Warsaw in 1990, have been hailed as a “hallmark of consistency,” and praised as a “sleek and tight death metal monster.” Since 2017’s Tremendum, Hate has focused on nature and its mysteries as a main source of inspiration. For instance, 2019’s Auric Gates of Veles focused on death, the Slavic perception of death in particular. Six years later, Bellum Regiis finds Hate delving into “humanity and why are we, as creatures, so deeply motivated by concepts like power, wealth, glory and faith. The main theme is a struggle for power and everything that comes with it.” Hence the album title Bellum Regiis, which translates to "A War of Royalty" or "A War of Kings."

Varese Sarabande revisits a classic horror soundtrack from it's early catalog with April Fool's Day, the 1986 black comedy slasher film directed by Fred Walton and scored by Charles Bernstein. April Fool's Day was originally released on vinyl (and later CD) by Varese Sarabande, in a synthesized performance not heard in the film itself. That 20-track, 30-minute synth program is included on this Deluxe Edition, along with the long-awaited premiere release of the actual orchestral recording heard in the film (23 tracks, 27 minutes), plus previously unreleased bonus tracks. This is the definitive April Fool's Day soundtrack release - and that's no joke! The first-ever release of the original orchestral film score also includes five bonus tracks from the composer's vaults.

The whodunit spoof stars Peter Falk, Alec Guinness, Peter Sellers and Maggie Smith, playing send ups of well-known fictional sleuths like Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, and features a rare acting performance by author Truman Capote. This reissue of Dave Grusin's original score for the film is pressed on "Diamond Yellow Marble" color vinyl and features cover art by Charles Addams sourced from the artist's original illustration.

The Iron Giant (1999) is an animated film directed by Brad Bird (The Incredibles) about a young boy who befriends a giant alien robot during the Cold War. Based on the 1968 book by Ted Hughes, the film is a marvel of heartfelt storytelling with timeless themes of friendship, caring and self-determination. Creating the beautiful score was Michael Kamen - one of his last major scores and his first animated film, miles away from the action blockbusters for which he had become known. His gorgeous score is full of melody, humor and sensitivity, grandly performed by the Czech Philharmonic. Var?se Sarabande originally released the score as a 49-minute program. This Deluxe Edition 2 LP set on GREEN vinyl is expanded to 64 minutes - including alternates, outtakes and demos (including an unrealized song, "Souls Don't Die," performed by Kamen and Eric Clapton). Tim Greiving's liner notes feature interviews with Brad Bird, Christopher Brooks and Blake Neely.
